SPIT IT OUT: CALUM ANDREWS
Calum Andrews is a Glasgow-born, Berlin-based, sub-3 marathoner. He's also a bit of a savant when it comes to what's on-trend (as you'll see from his laundry-room-stroke-walk-in-wardrobe). We crossed paths with Calum at the beginning of the CLOBBER journey and have stayed in touch since. Through 'Spit It Out', we'll introduce friends of the brand that inspire us and that we relate to. We couldn't think of a better person to kick off the feature than Calum. Enjoy.
HOW WOULD YOUR RIDE-OR-DIE SUM YOU UP? He is an almost annoyingly morning person, who loves his routines but always jumps on spontaneous ideas. When he sets his mind to something, he's all in - hyper-focused and determined, never letting go until he's achieved it. I swear he might actually be addicted to sour sweets (words from my wife).
WHERE ARE YOU LIVING AT THE MOMENT? Berlin.
HOW DID YOU END UP THERE? After a post-university stint of working in recruitment, my girlfriend (now wife) and I hopped in my grandfather's VW Polo and drove across in the summer of 2017. The car has not been back since, and we have settled now and made Berlin our home.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO RUNNING? The uncertainty of COVID! Growing up, I always needed to be active and move to clear my mind and organise my thoughts. My world revolved around playing basketball. Due to the pandemic and closure of gyms, social distancing, etc (we all know what happened), I stepped off the court and onto the streets. With the purpose of keeping fit, clearing my head and socialising, it wasn't long until I was many kilometres deep into the world of running.
WHAT'S THE NEXT BIG RACE FOR YOU? I have a lot coming up in the near future, but as for my next big race, I'm not too sure. After coming off a training block for the Copenhagen Marathon in May, it's nice to just be running again and not training. As I am writing this, I have a backyard ultra this coming Sunday. 5km on the hour, every hour for 24 hours...so let's see how that goes. Late July is the Adidas City Night 10km race in Berlin. In August, I will be taking part in another Speed Project. In September, I will be running the Berlin Marathon for the 3rd consecutive year (this time just for fun).
YOU'VE GOT SOME BIG MARATHON TIMES UNDER YOUR BELT. ANY TIPS? Time on feet and listen to your body. No marathon is easy, but the more you listen and work with yourself in your training block, the more it will pay off on race day (at least for the first 30km or so...).
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO RUN? Uff! I cannot settle for one answer. Winter runs in the Scottish Highlands when visiting my parents. Crack of dawn tempo sessions in Manhattan around Marathon week. Sundown sessions along the Spree River in Berlin.
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO POST-WORKOUT SNACK/MEAL? Post-long run, it has to be pasta. Nothing else hits the spot like fresh pasta can. Post-track/tempo session, I always gets in a Maurten 160 Drink Mix. It stops me from inevitably eating all the sour sweets in our snack drawer.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT RUNNING? The sad truth is that in a training block, it is straight to recovery to get ready for the next run. However, now that I am running to run, I have been hitting the climbing gym, playing padel and strength training. That was until I went back to basketball and broke my rib 3 weeks ago. Now, it's video games and binge-watching shows. Get The Last of Us on if you haven't seen it already.
WITH OR WITHOUT EARPHONES FOR RUNNING? Never. It's just me, myself and I when I'm running.
WHAT ARE YOU ENJOYING LISTENING TO AT THE MOMENT? I'm all over the place with my music taste, but for the time being, I'm jumping between mellow grime (WIZE, db. and BexBlu), as well as banging some more eclectic artists, like Window Kid, Griselda and Wiki.
